Abstract PL
Abstract EN
In the present text the “edge” metaphor used by Aronin and Politis (in Theory and Practice of Second Language Acquisition 1:27–49, 2015) in their article on multilingualism is taken as a starting point to examine the concept of borders and the specificity of multilingualism in the spacetime of internal and external borderlands on the example of Central and Eastern Europe. Factors influencing identity construction and language choices, such as language policy of the states, political pressures, mobility, gender, religion and social class are identified in the context of moving administrative borders and changing sovereignty. Conflict prevention and management is also discussed as well as the potential of borderlands to function as laboratories of good educational practice promoting individual and social multilingualism.
