Artykuł śledzi debatę na temat amerykanizacji kultury, szczególnie w kontekście kulturowych punktów styku między Europą a Ameryką,. Autor argumentuje, że starsze modele tej wymiany kulturowej, zakładające dominację kulturową USA, zwłaszcza w obszarze kultury popularnej, nie odpowiadają już współczesnej rzeczywistości, w której przepływy kulturowe biorą początek po obu stronach Atlantyku i sprowadzają się do wzajemnego przenikania się kultur,. Rozwijając tę perspektywę, autor bada, w jaki sposób relacje transatlantyckie były historycznie zakorzenione w zmiennej dynamice typu „miłość-nienawiść”, w której zarówno amerykańska, jak i europejska tożsamość były często konstruowane w opozycji względem siebie. Podczas gdy połowa XX wieku była zdominowana przez ramy „imperializmu kulturowego” — charakteryzujące się terminami takimi jak „coka-kolonizacja” — źródła sugerują, że ten model centrum-peryferie stracił na atrakcyjności,.
Zamiast tego współczesna nauka coraz częściej postrzega amerykańską kulturę popularną jako wszechstronny „zestaw narzędzi” (toolkit), który lokalne społeczności selektywnie sobie przyswajają, co prowadzi do kulturowych negocjacji, hybrydyzacji i kreolizacji,. Autor zauważa, że „soft sell” amerykańskiej kultury może tracić na atrakcyjności w obliczu obecnej retoryki politycznej, co dodatkowo wymusza zwrot w stronę transnarodowych studiów amerykańskich (Transnational American Studies),. Abstract EN
The article traces the debate over Americanization of culture, specifically in the context of the cultural interfaces between Europe and America. The author argues that the older models of this cultural exchange positing the cultural dominance of the US, particularly in the popular culture area, no longer correspond to the contemporary reality in which the culture flows originate on either side of the Atlantic and amount to a mutual cross-pollination of cultures.
Expanding on this perspective, the author examines how the transatlantic relationship has been historically rooted in a volatile “love-hate” dynamic, where both American and European identities were often constructed in "self-confident opposition" to one another. While the mid-twentieth century was dominated by the “cultural imperialism” framework—characterized by terms like “Coca-Colonization” and the perceived colonization of the European "cultural subconscious"—the sources suggest this center-periphery model has lost its appeal.
Instead, contemporary scholarship increasingly views American popular culture as a versatile “toolkit” that local communities selectively appropriate, leading to cultural negotiation, hybridization, and creolization. The author notes that the “soft sell” of American culture may be losing its appeal in the face of current political rhetoric, further necessitating a shift toward Transnational American Studies. This paradigm shift moves away from mythic national traits to focus on marginalized voices and the multidirectional interdependencies between the American mainstream and global cultures. The article calls for a strengthened international dimension in the field to better reflect the complex, cross-border flows that define modern cultural relations.
