„Ojciec dał mu pudło z truizmami”, i co dalej? Lektura wiersza Louisa MacNeice’a

dc.abstract.enThis article presents and proposes a reading of the 1961 poem The Truisms by the Irish poet Louis MacNeice. It evokes the poet’s father, a Church of Ireland bishop. The truisms of the title are associated with family, home and inheritance, and thus also the father’s religion, the subject of MacNeice’s life-long argument. The figure of home recurs in MacNeice’s late work as a place one needs to come to terms with. Hence the parable form of the poem echoes the parable of the prodigal biblical son. It typically juxtaposes MacNeice’s aversion to dogma and universals with his need for myth or some system of repetition, but such that would have nothing to do with stagnation. In my discussion, I show Truisms against the background of MacNeice’s other poems to exemplify the tension maintained throughout his work between the permanent and the unstable. This resounds also when the question of identity is tackled, and illustrates Heraclitus’s early influence on MacNeice’s poetry.
dc.abstract.plArtykuł jest prezentacją i propozycją odczytania wiersza irlandzkiego poety Louisa MacNeice’a pt. Truizmy z 1961 roku. Przywołana jest w nim postać ojca poety, biskupa kościoła irlandzkiego. Tytułowe truizmy kojarzą się z domem rodzinnym i dziedziczeniem, a więc także religią ojca, z którą poeta prowadził spór. Figura domu powraca w późnej twórczości MacNeice’a jako miejsce, z którym trzeba się ułożyć na nowo. Stąd paraboliczna forma wiersza, a w niej echo przypowieści o synu marnotrawnym. Charakterystyczne dla MacNeice’a jest tu zderzenie jego niechęci do dogmatów i uniwersaliów z potrzebą mitu czy jakiegoś systemu powtórzeń, który jednak nie miałby nic wspólnego ze stagnacją. W moim omówieniu pokazuję Truizmy na tle innych wierszy MacNeice’a, by zilustrować utrzymywane w całej twórczości Irlandczyka napięcie pomiędzy tym, co stałe, i tym, co niestałe. Jest to problem, który wybrzmiewa również, gdy mowa o tożsamości, i który ilustruje wpływ, jaki na poezję MacNeice’a miał Heraklit.
