Abstract PL
Abstract EN
The refugee experience is associated with the negative consequences for children caused by witnessing war, violence, separation from family and friends, loss of home and sense of insecurity. In a new country, children also face entering a new school, new culture and society, often experiencing exclusion, harassment and rejection. In such difficult situations, the role of parents, especially mothers, is crucial. Good relationships and support from mothers help stabilize emotions and enter a new world. Mothers’ emotional capital is one of the basic resources that help children find their way in the new reality. The lack of such resources, on the other hand, may have negative effects on the child’s sense of security and emotional stability, as well as expose them to further negative experiences from other children and adults. This article presents the roles of mothers of children who experienced forced migration from Ukraine to Poland as a result of the brutal Russian invasion. The study is based on the analysis of data from individual interviews with 22 mothers living in Poland. The results of the analysis emphasize the role of mothers in making decisions about migration, educating their children and building relationships with their children. Mothers’ emotional capital plays an important role in these processes. Moreover, the results of the analysis indicate the important role of children’s agency and mothers’ listening to children in decision-making and adaptation processes in a new country.
