Abstract PL
Abstract EN
The article presents a concept in which collective memory is an autonomous area of social activity – a dynamic system of interactions, established relationships, institutions and activities that use cultural patterns, ideas, values, symbolic codes and communication tools developed by society in order to create, agree, register and transmit to those living in the present and to future generations socially shared contents regarding the relationship between the past and the present and images, symbols, information and assessments regarding the past of a specific group. In collective memory understood as such, three intersecting dimensions are particularly important: subjective, referring to people taking actions aimed at preserving the memory of their own group’s past; functional, including commemorative activities; and objective – a set of views on the relationship between the past and the present and ideas about the group’s past.
