Evaluation, as a part of policy sciences, has been focusing on helping decision-makers undertake better-informed policy decisions. In this chapter, we explore what specific persuasion strategies from Chinese pre-imperial (453–221 BCE) political discourse could inspire our communication with decision-makers in the post-truth era. In our view, modern modes of social communication are by no means unique, but rather exploiting universal decision-making mechanisms that have shaped human interaction regardless of time and place. Thus, we find it viable to look beyond the well-trodden paths of our own cultural and temporal context and search for inspiration in the rich heritage of Asian cultures. The chapter consists of three sections. First, we provide the rationale for choosing the historical period with literature sources from the Chinese tradition and explain our analytical method. Second, we provide an in-depth analysis of the original Chinese sources. We discuss three main communication strategies that emerged from the analyzed texts illustrating them with narrative examples. Finally, we link those findings with current developments in public policy, putting forward five lessons for evaluation practice. These are (1) understanding the addressee's mental models, (2) applying rhetoric strategies, (3) triggering cognitive dissonance, (4) enlightening about long-term implications, and (5) making the argument visible
