The purpose of this study was to investigate personification in popular sci-ence interpretations of Korean bug names deemed metaphorical. This can be a strategy for bringing about understanding and empathy in communicating knowledge on insects and spiders in South Korea. The an animal is a human being metaphor was presented in the context of “The Great Chain of Being” metaphor system. The analysis of lexical items in the linguistic material was conducted from the perspective of conceptual metaphor. References to human experience and cultural awareness of Koreans were detected along with posi-tive value judgments, which can make scientific knowledge more accessible.
