Szybki rozwój technologii zagraża oprogramowaniu, które UNESCO uznaje za unikalne dziedzictwo cyfrowe. Jego wartość tkwi w funkcjonalności, dlatego konserwacja musi zachować jego potencjał wykonawczy. Badanie jakościowe przeprowadzone przy wykorzystaniu metody studium przypadku (analiza m.in. systemu Unix i oprogramowania misji Apollo) pozwoliła zidentyfikować strategie, takie jak emulacja środowiska i migracja formatów, oraz wyzwania: zależności sprzętowe, złożoność kodu i problemy z prawem autorskim. Fragmentaryzacja działań muzealnych i prawna „szara strefa” stanowią zagrożenie dla tych działań. Mają one istotne znaczenie, bowiem zachowanie oprogramowania jest kluczowe dla dostępu do dziedzictwa cyfrowego i uniknięcia „cyfrowej epoki ciemnej”.
Abstract EN
The rapid advancements in technology have the potential to jeopardize the integrity of software, which is recognized by UNESCO as a unique form of digital heritage. Its value lies in its functionality, therefore preservation efforts must ensure the maintenance of its executable potential. A qualitative study was conducted using case studies (including the Unix system and Apollo mission software). The study identified strategies such as environment emulation and format
migration, as well as challenges: hardware dependencies, code complexity, and copyright issues. The fragmentation of museum activities coupled with the legal ambiguity of this domain also pose a threat to the continuity and integrity of these activities. They are of significant importance as the preservation of software is crucial for facilitating access to digital heritage and averting a ‘digital dark age’.
